In Memory

Mickey Frank

Update 2021 from Peter Poffenberger:  I was in HHS class of 1966. Mickey & I were good friends & entered the army together along with Brent Raffetto (HHS class of '66) in early March 1969. Mickey & I left for Vietnam approximately the same time & Mickey was assigned to 17th CAV 101st ABN Division & I went to 1/27th 25th Infantry Division. Mickey was killed while supporting the defense of Fire Support Base Ripcord which had been under siege for over a month. This is documented in the book "Hell on a Hill Top - America's Last Major Battle In Vietnam" by Major General Benjamin L. Harrison US Army, Retired. Mickey's name is on page 221 in the Epilogue of this book.

Mickey lived just down the street from me growing up. I remember fondly playing "horse" after basketball practice with him and winning enough money to buy a milkshake at the little store just up from the main intersection of 1st Ave and 152nd. He and I would walk home together everyday, stop and get something to drink. We always laughed about it. He would win enough from other guys to lose some of it to me everyday. The universe works in strange ways. I was very saddened when I heard of his death, a prime example of a senseless loss of a young man way too soon. He was a simple soul. He deserved better.
